RATAN TATA

The man with steely resolve

"his current lifestyle is almost spartan"

"He is not where he is by design. Having studied architecture at Cornell University and management at Harvard, he may have remained an architect, regardless of his surname. But his grandmother fell very ill and he kept coming back to India to see her. One thing led to another and he stayed back."

"t's tempting to forget that Tata is the same man who had been written off after he supervised the wind-up of Nelco, the radio making company of the group. He was not given a chance in hell when he took over as the chairman of Tata Sons in 1991, when the likes of Russi Mody and Ajit B Kerkar ran their own fiefdoms"

CARLOS SLIM HELU

When is enough, enough?

"On 8th August 2007, Fortune magazine reported that Carlos Slim had overtaken Bill Gates as the world's richest man. Carlos Slim's estimated fortune soared to US$59 billion, based on the value of his public holdings at the end of July. Microsoft founder Bill Gates' net worth was estimated to be at least US$58 billion.
On 4th August 2007, The Wall Street Journal ran a cover story profiling Slim. The article said, "While the market value of his stake in publicly traded companies could decline at any time, at the moment he is probably wealthier than Bill Gates"

"Slim's critics claim that he is a monopolist, noting that his company Telmex controls 90% of the Mexican landline telephone market (the other 10% is controlled by TELNOR, which only serves on the Northwest part of Mexico). The contrast between Slim's wealth and the poverty of much of Mexico's population is also troubling to critics. Slim's wealth is equal to roughly 7% of Mexico's annual economic output, an astronomical figure compared to that of America's top billionaires. At the height of John D. Rockefeller's wealth his income only totalled 2.5% of America's economic output. Over the last two years Slim has made an average of $27 million per day."

ZHANG YIN

Richest woman becomes richer

"Zhang, the 49-year-old founder and chairwoman of the paper company, was reported to be the mainland's richest person with a fortune of 27 billion yuan (3.4 billion U.S. dollars)."

"Zhang is believed to be the wealthiest self-made woman in the world. According to Rupert Hoogewerf, who set up the Huran Report in 1999 which lists wealthy people in China. She is richer than the U.S. television host Oprah Winfrey and author of the Harry Potter series JK Rowling."

"Born in a soldier's family in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, Zhang was the eldest sister to seven children. She went to Hong Kong in 1985 and started her career in waste paper trading with 30,000 yuan."
